DeCrescente Distributing Goes GREEN!
The fourth-generation family-owned company recently completed green and energy efficient changes to its sprawling facility.
Skylights were installed in the warehouses to utilize more natural light, and large High Volume Low Speed Fans are spinning in the large drive-thru pick up area to increase circulation of the air. Better temperature management is promoted through new State-of-the-art Energy Management System in the office areas and pressure sensitive doors in the warehouses, explained Russ Teplitzky, DeCrescente’s general manager.
New high efficiency lighting and daylighting occupancy controls were installed throughout the 205,000 square feet of the almost 63-year-old business that employs 300 people. Solar panels, which can be seen even from routes 4 and 32, were also installed.
So far, the green efforts have saved about 284,000 kilowatt hours, equivalent to taking 1,200 cars off the road or saving 9,000 trees from being cut down.
American Energy assessed the property about a year ago for the green initiatives and provided the turn-key project which benefited from over $125,000 in incentives from NYSERDA and NYSEG.
"Everyone's talking about going green," says Russ Teplitzky, general manager of DeCrescente Distributing Company. "You can either talk about it or you can do something about it."
DeCrescente, in Mechanicville, chose the "do something" route -- to the tune of a half-million dollars' worth of energy improvements. The project was underscored by their belief that doing the right thing can also make good business sense.
Beverage distributor DeCrescente is a homegrown Capital Region company that started in 1948 with one truck. Today, they're a fourth-generation family business that moves 9 million cases of beer and other drinks annually to supermarkets, bars, restaurants and convenience stores across the 11-county greater Capital Region.
