SABIC has completed a significant lighting and energy controls upgrade project at its Selkirk, NY manufacturing site with the help of a more than $900,000 energy rebate from National Grid. This successful investment and collaboration helps support one of SABIC’s key sustainability initiatives: reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

The energy savings from this project is equivalent to providing electricity to more than 200 homes in a medium sized American city annually, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing more than 800 vehicles from the road annually.
Dom Perfetti, Selkirk Site operations manager said, “We are pleased to have completed this project on time and within budget. Electricity is the one of the largest levers we can use to reduce energy reduction and greenhouse gas intensity for the Selkirk site.

Collaborating with AEC and National Grid through an energy rebate helped turn this project into a reality. This type of collaboration is one excellent example of SABIC’s efforts to drive sustainability in its operations, benefitting both our community and our business performance.”

“National Grid is committed to assisting homes and businesses reduce their
energy use through a variety of energy efficiency rebates and programs,” said William Flaherty, National Grid Director of Community and Customer Management. “SABIC’s Selkirk facility is a perfect example of how National Grid can help businesses invest in efficient equipment that will ultimately save them money and reduce their energy use.

The project included replacing the existing lighting infrastructure with energy efficient lighting fixtures, lamps, LED’s, occupancy sensors, controls, and an advanced computerized lighting management system throughout approximately 75 percent of the site to capture energy savings. The upgrade, which began in December of 2011,was completed at the end of 2012.

The energy savings are directly aligned with SABIC’s sustainability goals recently announced in its Sustainability Report around establishing environmental performance targets for reductions in greenhouse gas, energy, water and material loss intensity in all its operations.

The project was developed, installed, and commissioned by AEC, a National Grid Tier 1 Energy Savings Partner (ESP), which performed a complete energy survey and analysis to identify potential energy conservation measures and then made recommendations to the company.
